How to Load a PES File on a Brother Machine
- Download the PES file and unzip it if needed.

- Insert the USB into the machine.
- Open the embroidery menu and choose the USB icon.
- Select the design, check the size and hoop, then start stitching.
Check Your Hoop Size First
If a design is larger than your hoop, the machine will not open it. Our ready-made designs come in 5×7 and 6×10 sizes, and our logo size guide explains common sizes for shirts, caps and jackets.
PES vs DST
PES is made for Brother and Baby Lock. DST is the commercial standard used by Tajima and many multi-needle machines. If you own both types, ask for both files. See DST vs PES vs JEF for the full comparison.
Getting a PES File of Your Logo
A logo has to be digitized before it can become a PES file. Renaming a JPG or PNG will not work. Our embroidery digitizing service delivers PES, DST and JEF files, usually within 24 hours. Read how to convert a logo to an embroidery file to learn how it works.
Frequently Asked Questions
What file format does a Brother embroidery machine use?
Brother home and semi-commercial embroidery machines use the PES format. Some newer models can also read DST.
How do I get a PES file onto my Brother machine?
Most models load designs from a USB stick. Copy the PES file to the USB, insert it into the machine and select the design. Some models also support Wi-Fi transfer through Brother’s app.
Can I convert DST to PES?
Yes, embroidery software can convert DST to PES, but colors may need to be set again because DST stores only stitches. For the best result, ask your digitizer for a PES file directly.
Why won’t my Brother machine read my PES file?
Common causes are a design larger than your hoop, an unsupported folder structure on the USB, or a corrupted download. Check the hoop size and keep the file in the main folder of the USB.
Do your designs include PES files?
Yes. Every Nex Punch design and custom digitizing order includes PES, plus DST and JEF.
